Chic KiDs

Simplifying Secondhand Shopping for Parents

An intuitive app and website connecting parents to effortlessly buy and sell pre-loved children's clothing

Overview

The Chic Kids mobile app and website were created to provide a seamless experience for parents looking to buy and sell pre-loved children's clothing. My role as the lead UX designer involved conducting comprehensive research, creating user personas, and designing the app's interface to ensure an intuitive user experience. By focusing on both buyers and sellers, we aimed to tackle the typical challenges faced in the resale market.

User Persona

Problems

  • Time-Consuming & Inconvenient Process
Selling children's clothes currently involves significant time and effort for busy parents (sorting, photos, listings, coordination). Buying is similarly fragmented.
  • Lack of Trust & Quality Assurance
Buyers often worry about the true condition of second-hand items online due to misleading photos and a lack of standardized quality guarantees.

Solutions

  • Time-Consuming & Inconvenient Process
Selling children's clothes currently involves significant time and effort for busy parents (sorting, photos, listings, coordination). Buying is similarly fragmented.
  • Lack of Trust & Quality Assurance
Buyers often worry about the true condition of second-hand items online due to misleading photos and a lack of standardized quality guarantees.

I conducted interviews with 5 parents to explore their experiences with buying and selling children's clothing. Participants were selected based on their recent involvement in resale activities, ensuring a diverse representation of challenges faced across different demographics. The key insights from these interviews revealed that parents consistently find it difficult to buy high-quality used clothes for their children, and the entire resale process is often annoying and cumbersome.

Background

Maria is a 34-year-old mother of two, living in a bustling suburban area. Her son, Leo, is 4, and her daughter, Sofia, is 18 months old. She works part-time as a graphic designer, balancing her career with her family responsibilities. Maria is tech-savvy and uses her smartphone for everything from managing her family's schedule to online shopping.

She's environmentally conscious and tries to make sustainable choices whenever possible.

Goals

  • Efficiently manage children's wardrobes
  • Contribute to sustainability
  • Maximize value from outgrown clothes
  • Find high-quality, affordable clothing
  • Save time and effort

Challenges

  • Lack of time: Her part-time work and full-time parenting responsibilities leave her with very little free time to dedicate to selling clothes or sifting through physical second-hand stores.
  • Uncertainty of quality: When buying pre-owned items online, Maria struggles with the inability to physically inspect the clothing, leading to concerns about rips, stains, or general wear and tear that aren't fully visible in photos.
  • Logistical complexities of selling: The process of photographing, listing, communicating with buyers, packaging, and shipping items is daunting and often acts as a barrier to selling clothes herself.
  • Trust and safety concerns: Maria worries about the reliability of unknown sellers or buyers, including potential scams, misrepresentations, or uncomfortable interactions.
  • Finding specific items
  • “I need more time in my day to get everything done.”
  • “I want my children to have quality clothes without breaking the bank.”
  • “I wish I can trust online sellers more when buying second-hand.”
  • “Uses her smartphone to online shopping.”
  • “Researches sustainable clothing brands and second-hand options”
  • “Struggles to find time to photograph, list, and ship items for resale.”
  • “Worries about balancing work and family responsabilities effectively.”
  • “Beleives sustainable choices are worth the effort.”
  • “Concerned about online safety when buying from or selling to strangers.”
  • “Overwhelmed by the constant demands of her time and attention.”
  • “Frustrated by the inefficiency of buying and selling second-hand items.”
  • “Satisfied when finding high-quality, affordable clothing for her children.’
